Heart Health

You can take it, lose it, cross it, and wear it on your sleeve. It can be hard, warm, heavy, broken, or bleeding. You can pour it out or speak straight from it. What is it?

The heart.

Ancient Egyptians believed that the heart had a will of its own and would move around inside the body. Science tells us our heart is a muscular organ about the size of a fist which is located just behind and slightly left of the breastbone.

The Greek Philosopher, Plato, had a theory. He said our reasoning ability originated with the brain yet our passions originated within the ‘fiery’ heart. We have learned anger causes an outpouring of stress hormones like adrenaline, which makes your heart beat faster and your blood pressure rise. Here are twenty five tips to control anger. We even have Chi Happiness an herbal supplement and the homeopathic remedy D.P.R. from Meripharm.

Aristotle had a philosophy that the heart collected sensory input from the peripheral organs through the blood vessels. He coined the term ‘heartfelt' which is still used today.

There has been a lot of misinformation about the heart over the years so let's look at the some positive information.

Caring For Your Heart

  • Avoid foods high in unhealthy fats. Avoid fried foods and Fast Foods.

  • Remember that your heart is a muscle. If you want it to be strong, you need to be physically active every day. Do a task that gets you huffing and puffing. Jumping rope, dancing, jogging, you know what to do.

  • Keep your body at a healthy weight. (remember those fruits and green vegetables). If weight is an issues we have specialized appoints to develop a plan for healthy weight loss.

Heart Health Hacks

Vanilla can be used for relaxation. In a Columbia University Medical Center study, subjects who smelled vanilla while completing stress tests had more stable heart rates and blood pressure than those who took the tests in an unscented environment. You can place a few drops of vanilla extract onto a handkerchief and carry it with you to smell throughout the day.

Meow. Research shows how owning a cat reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes by more than a third.

Doing activities that bring you joy have very real health benefits. Engaging in a hobby has been shown to reduce stress and can even activate genes that increase immunity and decrease inflammation.

Your heartbeat can change depending on the music you listen to so find sounds you truly enjoy. Music by Mozart and Strauss have been scientifically found to lower blood pressure. Put on your headphones and chill.

Eating dark chocolate reduces the risk of heart disease so feel free to indulge in a small piece, guilt free.

Feeling a strong sense of positive emotion and overall happiness has been shown to decrease your risk of heart disease.

Laughing is good for your heart. It reduces stress and gives a boost to your immune system.

Myths

Contrary to popular belief, sneezing does not stop your heart or make it “skip a beat.” It can, however, briefly change your heart’s rhythm. The only time your heart stops is during cardiac arrest.

It is not healthier to wear your heart on your sleeve. Suppressing emotions creates an imbalance internally and this can lead to tension, dysfunctional behavior and even physical illness. Have a heart-to-heart talk with someone and breathe.

Heart disease can run in your family yet it is eighty percent (80%) preventable. Simple behavioral changes in diet, exercise, and tension can change everything.

Your heart deserves to be loved for all the work it does. It started pumping blood before you were born and will continue pumping throughout your whole life.
