The Lymphatic System

 

What is the Lymphatic System and how does it work? The lymphatic system is the network of various organs, tissues and vessels that help keep your body clean. It removes waste and toxins so you can stay healthy.

 

In addition to the waste disposal service, the lymph is also responsible for absorbing fatty acid and fats for nutrients. Pretty important for good health.

 

Check Your Lymphatic System

 

Want to check the condition of your Lymphatic System? Here are a few questions you can answer to discover how well your lymph system works for you.

 

First Question.

Stand up.

Place your right hand on your chest and your left hand over your belly button.

Now, take a normal breath.

Which hand went the higher?

 

If it was your left hand give yourself 10 points.

If it was your right hand you get 0 points.

Don’t panic! There are more questions.

 

Second Question.

How would you rate your metabolism compared to most people you know?

If your metabolism allows you to eat a lot anytime and not gain weight, consider yourself in the HIGH range. Give yourself 10 points.

If your metabolism seems about average. Give yourself 5 points.

If your metabolism is lower than most people you know (you gain weight by walking past a bakery), you get 0 points.

 

Third Question.

How are you with stairs?

If you can easily walk up two flights of stairs without feeling winded, give yourself 10 points.

If you can easily make it up the stairs, but your breathing harder than normal, give yourself 5 points.

If you feel like lying down and taking a nap after two flights of stairs give yourself 0 points.

 

Forth Question.

Take a timer and count how many breaths you take in 1 minute.

If it’s between 4-7 give yourself 10 points.

If it’s between 8-13 give yourself 5 points.

If it’s 14 or more, give yourself a 0 points.

 

Fifth Question.

Which statement best describes your energy level?

I have so much energy it’s hard for me to sit down to do this research. Give yourself a 10 points.

I wish I had more energy but I’d hardly call myself a sloth. Give yourself 5 points.

My energy level is depleted when I think about my day. Give yourself 0 points.

 

Results.

 

If you have 35-50 points, congratulate yourself. Your lymph system is moving more than most people.

15-34 points -- you are half way there and can easily improve and support from our office will give you the boost you are looking for.

WHAT BACKS UP THE LYMPH SYSTEM?

 

Lack of Movement: Proper lymphatic flow requires deep breathing and body movement because there is no pump to the lymph system. The contraction of skeletal muscles force tiny one-way valves of the lymph system to open and close and push the fluid to the subclavian veins.

 

Dehydration: Dehydration can contribute to poor lymphatic drainage and cause lymphatic stagnation.

 

Stress: Stress-fighting hormones are acidic and an acidic body leads to lymph congestion.

 

Chronic Digestive Imbalance: Chronic constipation or diarrhea due to damaged intestinal villi promotes lymph congestion.

 

Processed Foods: An unhealthy diet, particularly one containing processed foods may lead to a sluggish lymphatic system.

 

Chemical Exposures: Harmful chemicals in skin and body care products, cleaning products or pesticides, can compromise your lymphatic system. Our bodies can’t always unload or detoxify these chemicals quickly.

Boost Your Lymphatic System 

 

The lymphatic system is considered a pump-less system. Unlike the heart that aids in moving the blood through the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has two ways of moving the toxins through you system. Deep diaphragmatic breaths and physical movement create lymph health.

Lymphatic Breathing Exercise

 

Place both hands on the stomach.

Inhale through the nose, expanding the stomach and keeping the shoulders still.

Slowly exhale through the mouth.

Repeat the exercise 3 to 6 times.

 

Dr. Jack Shields, lymphatic system specialist from Santa Barbara, California, put cameras inside people’s bodies to see what stimulated the removal of toxins. He found that deep belly breathing can multiply the pace at which your body eliminates toxins fifteen times more than chest breathing.

 

Movement stimulates the lymph nodes and lymph vessels that directly supports the removal of toxins while enhancing the immune system.  It doesn't have to be big movement.  Gentle movement on a re-bounder is adequate.

 

Swimming/water aerobics – with the body weight reduced by about 90% in chest-deep water, the pressure exerted by the water on the body surface contributes to lymphatic and venous return.

 

Walking – Take your time and enjoy a 20-minute walk outdoors, or on a treadmill (10-15 minutes, slow walking speed).

 

Easy Biking – 25-20 minutes either outdoors or at the gym, using a comfortable and wide saddle. Legs are placed in a higher position on recumbent bikes, which makes them a better choice for individuals affected by lower extremity lymphedema.

 

Yoga – the combination of stretching, deep breathing, relaxation and the positive impact on the venous and lymphatic return, makes yoga a perfect choice of exercise.

 

Trampoline/Re-Bounder -- Jumping on a trampoline or gentle movement on a re-bounder cleanses your lymphatic system which helps remove toxins from the body. Because lymphatic fluid flows in an upward direction, the vertical movements of jumping on the trampoline are more effective in pumping lymph fluid, than horizontal motion exercises such as walking and running.

What is an LET Session?
